Excellent illustrations and orderly stepsRating: 5

I’ve used Photoshop for several years as a hobbyist off and on (w/o any experts around to help me). If your goal is like mine - to get a nice project done with minimal time investment - this is the book for you! There’s too much talk/reading in other training materials I’ve tried.

Because I will never use Photoshop often/continuously to master the concepts - I find learning multiple upon multiple steps to complete a task is just too complicated and time consuming for me. By the time I revisit the same task, I have forgotten how to do it.

The index is super and it’s a snap to quickly find what you want to do. Just follow the steps and pictures and you have it! And ’tips’ give wiggle room to be more creative.

For Photoshop beginners it may be best to start with Elements before attempting Photoshop. Then a book like this will be a piece of cake.

If a Volume 2 w/ another 100 tips/tricks were available, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!

I really love this book. It takes you, with illustrated procedures all the way, through the best of Photoshop CS3 and shows you with illustrations some of the most useful, professional plug ins as well. I love a book that does not just extol the virtues of its primary subject but recognizes its (few) shortcomings and explains how to circumvent them. Well worth the money.

I had expected another book without much meat on the bone and difficult to follow, however I have been very well satisfied with my purchase. It’s well written with easy to follow instructions using computer screen shots to enrich the text instructions. The book covers a wide veriety of useful subjects, some more advanced than others but non the less easy to follow even if you are a complete novice to Photoshop.

I would thoroughly recommend this book, not only for it’s content but the way in which the book has laid out and written.

While I enjoyed the illustrative screenshots, this book is what it says it is. It’s not for the newbie Photoshop user. If you are Intermediate, then I think its a great buy. It gives you valuable tips, and is not there to give you step by step detail on how to accomplish a task. All together, a good buy, just not recommended for beginners.

I bought the CS Bible along with this and haven’t gotten to it yet (it’s huge!) but this book is so well written - with pictures, and exact numbered steps on how to perform each function, I doubt I will use the Bible other than for occasional reference. I’m very pleased the Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks!

there are some interesting tips in this book. Same things are shown in the podcasts by professional photographers, but here it is in front of you. I’m glad I found this book.

I have always been skeptical about following tips and tricks of photoshop CS3 from books...humans are normally visual in nature. It is easier to follow instructions thru DVD tutorials because you get what you see and this book is just as close as can be vs a DVD tutorial to teach simple tricks on CS3. It is easy to follow and the author really knew how to keep it simple. I love it and I highly recommend it to anybody wanting to learn CS3 the way it should be. If you are a novice in photoshop this is the way to go....

This is a "must have" to help you get up and running with CS3. All the most common things you need to do are covered - and it’s fast and easy to go back and find the lessons when you do a memory dump . . .

Very simple and effective. The other books on the subject are now in the library but this one is beside my computer.

As most people who have used Photoshop know, it’s like driving a ferrari when what you need is little red wagon. Too much info! Lynette Kent has the knack for simplifying the seemingly incomprehensible. In as little as two pages (of large type and excellent real window examples) she is able to guide the reader through very useful tricks and tips which can be applied in infinate ways. I look forward to seeing more of her work. I hear she is about to publish a book on Lightroom which I await with glee. Thank you Lynette!

I bought this book because of good review. Only to find out this book only cover the basic and simple task. Good for the beginner, nothing new for someone who have experience in PICTURE IT or PAINT SHOP PRO or PHOTO SHOP DELUXE.

28 May 2008 @ amazon.com

I bought this book because of the fine reviews and the reasonable price. I found the book close to useless. PURCHASERS BEWARE: There was no was to access the example pictures that were used as demos. I was supposed to search through my pictures to find faulty pics to use. Do you list your photos by "distorted" "blemishes" etc.? I do not and I dont think you or I want to spend time looking for examples to work on.

The book lets me to dive into cool secrets of Photoshop, teaches timesaving tricks, and helps me work smarter and faster. It is certainly useful to Photoshop novices in furthering their understanding and practising, and also as as a quick hands-on reference book to seasoned veterans of this powerful program. The book is very well worth buying.
Another (good) way to learn PhotoshopRating: 5
22 Feb 2008 @ amazon.com

Adobe Photoshop has had a long and well-deserved reign at the top of the heap of digital image editors. The broad-ranging capability of this behemoth to parse and modify pixels in just about any way imaginable, and the dedication of its parent company Adobe to continue to improve it and make its tools available to as many high-level users as possible has helped it carve a rather niche in the industry. But one of the drawbacks is a steep learning curve.

If want to teach yourself more about a number of Photoshop CS3’s capabilities and you prefer complex issues carved up into small, illustrated packets - that is, you’re a visual learner - this book would be an excellent choice. One of the "Simplified Tips & Tricks" series, it is part of Wiley’s 5-Star Visual Learning System, all of which have these features: 1. Minimal text and maximum illustrations; 2. Task-oriented, step-by-step approach; 3. Navigational aides connect instructions to illustrations; 4. Self-contained, two-page lessons; 5. Uniform layout makes it easy to read less, learn more.

It’s important to note the presumption by the author that you already know Photoshop CS3 basics; the intent is not for this book to be your first tutorial, but to help you learn more shortcuts, tips, and tricks quickly and efficiently after you’ve mastered the fundamentals of installation, opening files, and other basic operations of the program.

Does the book succeed? Very well, in my view. Though my personal learning style tends to be more old-school, textbook oriented, I was very positively impressed with how well the book meets the goals of the 5-Star Visual Learning System. The limited commentary is direct, informative, and spare without falling into the trap of trying to be distractingly trendy, quippy, and cute. Illustrations are well done, covering much of each two-page spread, and companion instructions are clear and concise. And the Tips boxes contain really useful additional information that in effect broadens the scope of the book well beyond the original 100 topics.

Conclusion -- highly recommended. While I’m generally put off by book publisher’s promises to make learning difficult topics easy, this is one example that actually succeeds.

Just what I have been looking forRating: 5
31 Jan 2008 @ amazon.com

I just received this book today and already love it! It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. The instructions are very elementary and easy to follow. You see the before, during and after photos, which make it even better for visual learners. The first pages of each section are very basic, but the pages after elaborate even further on each tip/trick. I also love how at the top of each page is a difficulty bar that lets you know how easy or difficult the tip/trick is.

I highly recommend this book. If you’re a beginner in Photoshop CS3, there’s plenty of room to grow with this book. If you’re a novice, you’ll find new tips/tricks to do that you didn’t already know.

I bought this book three weeks ago and have used it a lot. Its good though it has its flaws. Perfect companion to have with Photoshop CS3 essential skills, which is more professional and very good, but I like the fun things on Simplified, which the other book does no have. All in all I recomend it, you learn a lot of neat things.

This book is a must in every graphic artists and Photographers library.
